Our Design Process
A well-planned pool, landscape and outdoor living environment can enhance your quality of living, while adding to the enjoyment and value of your home. Knowing where or when to start on your project can be a difficult one. We’re here to help. Our design process has proven to be a simple, streamlined, enjoyable process. We work interactively with you to form a design that integrates your budget, ideas and lifestyle into one unified plan. Several plan types are available, ranging from hand drawn to custom 3D renderings.
-
Initial Consultation
Our design process begins with you contacting us to schedule an appointment for one of our designers to meet you on site. We will discuss objectives, ideas and inspiration for your project. We'll also discuss preliminary budget and a timeline for completion of your design. This appointment is typically scheduled within 1 day to 2 weeks of your initial contact.
-
Site Analysis
If you are satisfied with our company and our offerings, and would like to move forward with a design, we will gather the necessary data and information needed to complete your design. This will include pictures, site measurements and elevations. For some projects, we may additionally need soils analysis and civil surveys. This stage typically begins within 1-3 weeks of your initial contact.
-
Design Curation
Our design team will curate a detailed plan of your project utilizing your objectives, budget, lifestyle and site data. When complete, the designer will contact you to schedule an appointment at our offices to review the concept plan we have ready for you. Plan types range from hand-drawn to 3D models. This stage typically takes 1-3 weeks from when we performed your site analysis.
-
Revision & Estimation
It is not uncommon to revise plans 2-3 times before we completely align with your vision for your outdoor space. Once we achieve that alignment, we will provide a detailed proposal for the costs involved in building your project. The proposal will include the detailed scope of the project, contract price and payment terms. At this juncture, we are typically around 1-2 months into the design process.
-
Preconstruction
Once we reach an agreement and have the project's contract and plan signed off on, we will begin creating the necessary construction documents to build your project. At this time we will also acquire any permitting, engineering and soils testing needed. Last, any custom or advanced lead time materials will be ordered. We will begin advising you of a tentative start date and keep you informed every step of the way until ground breaking.
-
Construction
Once all documentation and drawings are obtained, we begin construction of your project. The construction timeline ranges from 1 week to 4 months depending on the scope of work.
-
Completion
Upon completion of your project, our designer will do a complete walkthrough of your project to assure your satisfaction with each facet of your project. If your project involves a pool, a separate meeting will take place to ensure you understand the operation and maintenance of your pool systems. We can also discuss the maintenance and service options we offer for both pool and landscape aspects of your project.
Frequently Asked Questions
For answers to the most common questions related to the landscape and pool environment design and build process, please see below.
The sooner we are involved in the construction process, the better. By having us involved early on, we are able to avoid issues that could arise if we were not to be involved until later. These items include foundation backfill compaction near future retaining wall and patio areas, site drainage, grading and future tree locations. This also allows a larger time frame for us to help you realize your future outdoor living and landscape objectives and complete the design process in most cases, before your home is even finished.
The cost of landscaping is difficult to generalize without site-specific information and the understanding of a project’s objectives. We typically find that most clients projects fall within 10-15% of the cost of their home. However, often times the projects are above or below that average based on the clients objectives and specific site conditions.
Yes, we offer free estimates. However, in order for us to accurately estimate your project, we require that a scaled plan be drafted to estimate from. This also allows our clients to have an exact understanding of the scope of work to be completed. All landscape plans remain in our possession until the final proposal is accepted and the scheduling deposit is made.
Absolutely. We work with our clients on a regular basis to develop a master landscape plan that is designed to be completed in anywhere from 2-5 stages while maintaining our clients’ initial budget and a cohesive design throughout.
Upon the initial meeting at your home, we will have a general time frame on when we can get started on your project. A more precise date will be confirmed upon acceptance of our proposal and plans. We ask that you please realize this date can be shifted due to weather conditions, project add-ons and/or changes and other unforeseen items. Without project objectives and site specific requirements at hand, the length of a project can vary greatly from one day to 4 months.
We typically travel within an hour radius of Rock Valley, Iowa. A few cities where we have completed landscaping and hardscape projects in include Hull, Sheldon, Rock Rapids, Sioux Center, Orange City, Le Mars, Spirit Lake, Iowa and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We definitely welcome project inquiries from cities further than our typical hour radius.
As with landscaping, pools are difficult to generalize without site-specific information and direct objectives. As a gerneral guideline, a backyard pool environment will start in the $150,000 – $175,000 range, and can reach upwards of $300,000+, depending on additional amenities, features and sitework.
Generally, pool projects take 8-10 weeks minimum from start to finish.
We hold our plans closely because of the time, experience and professional approach we take to cultivating your plans. For these reasons, we retain our plans until the project contract is signed and the deposit is made to schedule your project.
